Sameer Berry – Los Angeles, CA

I have lived all over the country and worked numerous jobs, but first and foremost I am a clinician. I will be starting my gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2019. I am currently working at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles where my research focuses on digital health, wearables, provider-wellness, and quality-improvement. My background spans many aspects of healthcare including policy work, pharmaceutical startups, and grant-funded research. I am very excited to be involved with Digital Health Today!

My first exposure to digital health was working with former-Governor Dukakis on how to reduce non-urgent ER visits in Massachusetts. We evaluated numerous exciting solutions, many of them digital, to re-triage these patients to more appropriate care. This exposed me to health systems and eventually I completed my MBA in health sector management. At Duke, I was exposed to numerous health technologies including wearables, artificial intelligence, behavioral apps, and much more. My experience at Duke and with Governor Dukakis gave me the foundation to pursue digital health research at Cedars-Sinai.

I live in Los Angeles and work at Cedars-Sinai. Every day Cedars is in the news for another innovation in digital health. Whether it’s Apple’s EHR integration, iPads in patient rooms, or wearables to encourage healthy activity after surgery – Cedars is doing it. In literally every space within digital health Cedars is leading the way and pushing things forward. It is an inherent part of the culture and legacy at the institution. For someone like me, as a trainee, I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to learn from such incredible mentors. It allows me to learn and take on ideas that may not have been picked up at a different institution. I’m most excited about the ability to take what patients are doing outside the hospital and make meaningful use of that data to improve health.
